Heartworms – Guess I’m Stuck In The Dark
The bass on “Guess I’m Stuck In The Dark” slides around the neck, it never lands, and nothing ever goes off. Jojo Orme opens in a sultry near-whisper over plucked strings. A tiny two-second loop keeps the pulse while bursts of guitar and keys cut across it, there’s a faint samba sway in the rhythm, and the keys push towards glam now and then. The chant at its centre gets repeated until it turns from coaxing to commanding to something close to a threat, and the song keeps building tension without ever paying it off. It started with a power cut during a writing session in Italy, and Orme says it’s about how the mind invents fears in the dark, “but also leaning into that, and trying to party alongside it.” Dan Carey stripped the demo back to the bones, and the result is the first taste of a second album already in the can, out now on Speedy Wunderground / Distiller Records. Less funeral, more glitterball, and all the better for it.
